HOW THE WEST WAS WON’s hugely ambitious production went massively over-budget, almost lost its final segment and saw a stuntman lose a leg. John Wayne director Henry Hathaway lamented difficult producer Sol Siegel on a Western epic with tons of stars from Henry Fonda and James Stewart to Debbie Reynolds and Gregory Peck that followed a storyline set over three generations.
